bobbi brown hydrating face cream review

I received some Bobbi Brown skincare recently; I’ve always liked their makeup, so I was quite excited to give it a shot.

The first thing I tested was the Hydrating Face Cream. It looks luxurious, comes in a gorgeous glass jar package, and smells yummy. $55 is quite the price tag, so my expectations were pretty high on this. As a Korean beauty connoisseur, I’ve learned to really analyze the benefits of premium cosmetics — if I can get the same thing (if not better) for under $20, why bother with the other stuff?

Here’s my experience with the moisturizer & if it’s actually worth the pretty penny:

Claims

(via BobbiBrownCosmetics.com)

  • hydrating, yet lightweight
  • instantly hydrates and moisturizes, conditions and nourishes throughout the day
  • ideal for layering under makeup

I was mainly curious about how this works under makeup; I had been HARDCORE eyeing the Vitamin Enriched Face Base, but I’d much rather have multi-use skincare products > makeup products that have skincare benefits.

Ingredients

WATER\AQUA\EAU, DIMETHICONE, BUTYLENE GLYCOL, CETYL ALCOHOL, ETHYLHEXYL PALMITATE, CAPRYLIC/CAPRIC/MYRISTIC/STEARIC TRIGLYCERIDE, ALEURITES MOLUCCANA (KUKUI) SEED OIL, MYRISTYL MYRISTATE, GLYCERYL STEARATE, ALGAE EXTRACT, CETYL PHOSPHATE, POLYPERFLUOROMETHYLISOPROPYL ETHER, CORIANDRUM SATIVUM (CORIANDER) SEED OIL, ROSMARINUS OFFICINALIS (ROSEMARY), ROSA CANINA (ROSE) FRUIT OIL, ELETTARIA CARDAMOMUM (CARDAMOM), LAVANDULA ANGUSTIFOLIA (LAVENDER), JASMINUM OFFICINALE (JASMINE), RETINYL PALMITATE, TOCOPHERYL ACETATE, CHOLESTEROL, LINOLEIC ACID, TREHALOSE, GLYCERIN, CAFFEINE, PEG-10 DIMETHICONE, ACRYLAMIDES COPOLYMER, MYRISTYL LAURATE, PHYTANTRIOL, ACRYLATES COPOLYMER, LECITHIN, PHYTOSPHINGOSINE, PROPYLENE GLYCOL STEARATE, SODIUM HYALURONATE, POLYSORBATE 20, CAPRYLYL GLYCOL, SORBITAN LAURATE, MYRISTYL ALCOHOL, PROPYLENE GLYCOL LAURATE, GLYCINE, CARBOMER, HYDROXYPROLINE, PROLINE, SODIUM CARBOMER, HEXYLENE GLYCOL, DISODIUM EDTA, PHENOXYETHANOL

This is a bit of a 50-50 for me. There are some really solid ingredients in here — lots of nice oils and extracts are present, but the jar packaging is such a precarious situation in terms of de-stabilization. I’m not super concerned about it, but it could be a major con when considering the price tag.

How It Worked Out

While I was wanting the Vitamin Enriched Face Base, this is a really pretty moisturizer for under makeup. It lets even the most matte of makeup glide on seamlessly, so I definitely want to keep using this when I’m rocking full-face foundation/powder/layers on layers on layers. It isn’t the best moisturizer in the world, but I do like it for an extra moisturizing step before makeup. I’m currently on the worst case scenario, where I can use this as just a primer on heavy makeup days.

If you’re deciding between the two, opt for the Face Cream; it’s double-duty while Face Base just primes for makeup (it claims to moisturize, but I wouldn’t count on it as just my moisturizer).

Conclusion

It’s not worth the price. At all. There are SO many products that beat this for way under $55. Sorry, but that’s just insane. Too much for too little — packaging can only do so much!!

It’s not the best skincare out there, but it does look beautiful under makeup. The effect is really pretty + soft, and a little goes a long way, so it’ll last you forever.

This is a solid addition to your skincare routine if you want to have a double-duty moisturizer and aren’t too particular about ingredients. Still, I wouldn’t use it every single day. It’s just not necessary in my personal skin routine. I’ll keep on using it as a primer, but won’t buy it again.

Miranda
